This chair, entitled "How High the Moon?" was designed by Shiro Kuramata in 1986. This example was made in 1999 by Vitra AG. It is made from epoxy resin-coated nickel-plated steel mesh. After leaving Tokyo, Kuramata worked with the Memphis Group in Milan from 1981-1983 before opening a design office in Paris. He combined Eastern and Western influences to produce furniture with ironic names in extraordinary forms using unusual materials (such as glass and plexiglass). "How High the Moon?" is the title of a Jazz piece by Duke Ellington. In its form and material, the chair subverts the weight and bulk of the overstuffed armchair on which it is modelled. Kuramata used similar rib mesh to fit out an entire boutique interior for the fashion designer, Issey Miyake.
