Description (Object or Artwork): Half portrait of Sake Deen Mahomed dressed in Indian dress . He was the Shampoing Surgeon, at Brighton and was born in 1749 in Patna and received his training with the East India Company. He left the service in 1784 and came to Europe. He went to Cork where he eloped with an Irish girl. In 1786 he bought his wife to Brighton and set up business on the seafront. He attracted clientelle, including both George 1V and William 1V, Lord Castlereagh, Lord Canning and Sir Robert Peel. Sake Deen Mahomed died in 1851 and is buried in St Nicholas Churchyard.
