Description: This photographic print shows a group of departing evacuees gathered in Brighton Station concourse during the Second World War. Numerous adults can be seen behind the children, including Councillors Dorothy Stringer and Herbert Toyne (third and seventh from left in the back row). The station timetable can also be seen in the background. A label on a girl's bag reads 'Children's Overseas Reception Board'. A boy has a Patcham cap with a windmill on it, another cap badge may be Varndean Grammar School. The overseas evacuation scheme was criticised because it favoured a privileged few, though many went. It was stopped when a ship carrying evacuees was torpedoed and many children drowned.
