The girl leading the group has a banner around her neck with details of the school upon it, possibly Plough Road School in Battersea. Children were first evacuated to Brighton on 1 September 1939, two days before war was officially declared. By July 1940, Brighton was no longer considered a safe area for children, and 30,000 evacuees were relocated, along with numerous local children.
