This large bowl stands on a foot ring. It is covered in a creamy crackle glaze and decorated overall in enamel colours and gilt. The design on the outside depicts two dragons amidst a densely packed carpet of flowers, all parts outlined with gilt. Some areas of the pattern are thickly inlayed with gilt. The inside of the bowl, although covered with gilt and enamel, has a simpler, repeating pattern of small flowers in red, orange, green, blue, purple and black, all edged in gilt. The base even has decoration including bands of geometric patterns in gilt, and sprays of flowers. There is also an Oriental maker’s mark. This type of ware is known as Satsuma and was probably produced for export.
