This painting by Charles H.H. Burleigh shows wounded soldiers in two rows of beds in the Music Room of The Royal Pavilion Brighton. At the suggestion of King George V, the Royal Pavilion and Dome Theatre were converted into a military hospital for wounded Indian soldiers. Several accounts exist of soldiers being brought in unconscious and on waking amid the oriental decorations of the Music and Banqueting Rooms believed themselves to be in Paradise (c.f. P. Vainker, 'The Royal Pavilion Estate as a War Hospital', Royal Pavilion & Museums Review, 1989, no. 1).
