Description (Object or Artwork): This album contains nine photographs of the interior of 34 Adelaide Crescent, Hove. The cover of the album bears the name of the owner: Harry Panmure Gordon. Harry Panmure Gordon was a resident of this property from 1879 to 1893. Both census information and the lavish decor visible in the photographs give an indication of the wealth of the Gordon household. In 1881 Gordon was a 42 year old stockbroker who was born in Bombay, India. He shared his household with an Australian wife, Caroline Gordon, and four servants. Their birthplaces alone suggest that the Gordons may have been a well-travelled couple. This may also have been an influence on their choice of furniture, much of which suggests a strong oriental theme.
