Bryony Bartlett-Rawlings (c.2007 Researched for The National Inventory of Continental European Paintings)
Polyxena is shown surrounded by priests at the altar of a temple. Pittoni used classical architecture to convey the appropriate period setting. Pittoni developed what he saw in the work of other Venetian artists into his own personal style, and he became one of the most popular painters of mythological subjects in the eighteenth century. Pittoni's representation of the sacrifice of Polyxena was so popular that numerous copies, including this version by his studio, were made to supply the demand.
