This painting depicts the face of Christ wearing a crown of thorns with blood and tears dripping down his face The story of the veil is that when Christ was passing on his way to Calvary, Veronica came out of her house and gave Christ a veil to wipe his face on and his features were then miraculously imprinted on to the cloth. The artist Phillippe de Champaigne was born in Brussels but worked in Paris most of his life where he was court painter to Louis XIII.
