This photographic print shows the Kemp Town slopes, Brighton. It is a view west from the shelter popularly known as the 'Temple'. The photograph was produced by the Borough Surveyor's department. It probably served as part of a record of damage caused to the slopes during the Second World War. The slopes had been taken over by the military, and the tunnel to Lewes Crescent blocked off. Much of the area was badly damaged by the occupation. In the late 1940s, the War Office paid £2,245 in compensation.
