James Henry Green was a recruiting officer for the Indian Army during the period of British rule. While assessing local people for their potential as recurits, Green became fascinated by the people and places he encountered in Burma.

Green's photographs are an important document of the ethnic diversity of Burma. They reflect many groups, such as the Kachin community, who have seen large numbers of people displaced through more recent conflicts in the country.
