This bicycle is known as a boneshaker and dates to c1880. It was invented by Reverend Samuel Webb Thomas of Southease in Sussex and ridden by him. The wooden and metal frame is painted burgundy and the handles and pedals of the bicycle are made of wood. It features swing pedals to ease going uphill on stony roads. 'Boneshakers' were so named because they had solid tyres and were extremely uncomfortable to ride.
