Photographic print of the Brighton and Shoreham railway. Dated May 11th 1840. Typed below print, From an old drawing. A detailed account of the opening of this line appeared in No.11 of this Magazine. Vol. II., p.173. A typed note on the back reads. The Brighton to Shoreham railway was opened on 11 May 1840. Although there was only room for 230 select passengers on the first run, there were plenty of spectators on hand to view this historic event. The general air of festivity was enhanced by the band of the 12th Lancers playing popular music. In the evening the satisfied directors and their guests sat down to an elaborate dinner at the Old Ship, Brighton.
