Cutting featuring a studio photograph of Ruth Compton, a manageress at Hanningtons in the early 20th century. It is adhered to the reverse of a colour photographic print of the interior of Hanningtons department store in North Street, Brighton, c1990s.
East Sussex Record Office states that Ruth Compton 'was employed by Hanningtons, probably as manager of the dress department. It is thought that she was born in the 1880s, the daughter of Edwin Compton, who was well known locally as a painter. She was one of 13 children, three daughters and 10 sons. Four or five of the children died during the influenza epidemic at the beginning of the century.' See ACC 8370/30 and GRR/CW?2.6.1994
