This is a colour illustration of the Brighton Aquarium. It is shown within a large fish with text above reading 'The Big Fish that cost £40,000!' The aquarium's walls appear to be collapsing and the contents flooding into the sea. Further captions below the image state 'Entered at Fishmongers Hall.' (left) and 'Drawn by William Gill.' (right); '(Dedicated to the Shareholders)' and the title 'The Brighton Aquarium. A Prospective View!' are printed centre. It is dated February 1902 yet the Chain Pier is visible on the right - it was destroyed in a storm in almost six years previous. The cartoon was probably produced following Brighton Corporation's purchase of the aquarium in October 1901 for £30,000 after its operators had got into financial difficulty.
