It is possible that the "Brighton and London Railway Without a Tunnel" scheme was one of a large number of schemes which were considered dubious ventures. Six different engineers applied to Parliament for powers to build a railway to Brighton, and a great deal of delay and controversy took place, but in 1837 Royal Assent was given to the scheme of John Rennie. When work was commenced John Urpeth Rastrick was appointed Superintendent Engineer. Extract from 'Southern Railway Magazine', December 1929.
