Extract from John George Bishop's 'Chain Pier: In Memoriam' (1897): 'Silver vase presented by Mr Mills Esq. to Captain Samuel Brown at The Old Ship Hotel in January 1826. Referring to the vase before him, Mr Mills said: "I am sensible that the feelings of the inhabitants are fully commensurate to the sentiments they have engraven on it; and I can only hope that it will descend to your children's children, as a memorial of the estimation in which you, Sir, are held by the people of Brighton; and that the Pier may prove as beneficial to you as it has done to this town."'
