Description:

Mummy portrait. Found fixed over the face of a mummified body in the Roman cemetery at Hawara in Egypt. It is painted in coloured beeswax onto a piece of lime wood.

The portrait shows how the man wanted to be remembered after his death. He is shown as young and healthy. His white robes are a deliberate display of status, distinguishing him as a member of the elite class of Romans who had settled in Egypt. The portrait was probably commissioned after the man had died and then set into the wrappings of his mummified body.
