This photographic print was made by the Borough Surveyor's department. It is a view of an air raid shelter trench for the Intermediate School, York Place, Brighton. The shelter is currently in the process of construction. A workman with a spade can be seen in the foreground of the picture. Although the joists have been erected, they have yet to be covered. The print was made as part of a record of local provisions against air attack. War with Germany had been declared three months before the photograph was taken.
