Date Created (of Object / Artwork):

Description (Object or Artwork):
This photographic print was made by the Borough Surveyor's department. It shows an air raid shelter for St John's School, Carlton Hill, Brighton. This is a view of the interior of the shelter. Construction work is clearly not yet complete. The roof is missing, and the torso of a waistcoated figure can be seen at the centre-top of the photograph. This photographic print was made as part of a record of local provisions against possible air raid attack. War with Germany had been declared less than three weeks before this photograph was taken.
