Description (Object or Artwork): This photograph shows a military checkpoint in an unidentifed area in Sussex during the Second World War. The checkpoint is fortified with sandbags, and barbed wire is visible in the foreground. Two soldiers can be seen in front of the checkpoint. One of these soldiers has raised his hand to a vehicle whose shadow can be seen on the left of the photograph. A bus can be seen behind the checkpoint. This bears a large advertisement for Tamplin's, a popular brewery based in Brighton. This photograph was probably taken shortly after the south coast was declared a 'defence zone' in March 1941. Visitors were prevented from entering the area during this time, and these restrictions were not lifted until 1943.
