This photographic print shows the Duke of York's cinema in Preston Circus, Brighton. It is a view east of the front of the cinema. A woman can be seen examining a poster by the entrance. The Duke of York opened in September 1910. It was owned by a former actress, Violet Melnotte-Wyatt, and named after another theatre she had previously built in London. The cinema was formally opened by the Mayor of Brighton, Edward Greere. The first film shown was 'Byways of Brighton' by the Hove film maker, George Albert Smith. The Duke of York is one of the few Brighton cinemas to have survived. The building is Grade II listed, and is a successful 'art house' cinema.
