This black and white photographic print shows the interior of the Odeon cinema in St George's Road, Brighton. It shows bomb damage following the air raid of 14 September 1940. A large hole can be seen in the roof, and a large amount of debris covers the seats. This cinema was built in 1934 as part of Oscar Deutsch's Odeon chain. The bomb that damaged the cinema occured during one of the worst air raids suffered by Brighton during the Second World War, on 14 September 1940. 55 people were killed in this attack, including four children and two adults within the building. The cinema was quickly repaired and reopened later that year. It continued to operate until 1960. The building was then used as a bingo hall, before it became a social centre for a religious group known as the Bethany Fellowship. The building was eventually demolished in 1986, and the site was used for Cavendish Court, a complex of sheltered accommodation for the elderly.
