This black and white photographic print shows the Essoldo cinema in North Street, Brighton. It is a view of the front of the building. The cinema is currently showing 'Bomba The Jungle Boy' and 'Brimstone'. The Essoldo opened in April 1940, and was orignally known as the Imperial Theatre. It was one of the last traditional picture houses built in Brighton. Designed by Samuel Beverley, it seated around 2000 people, and its interior followed the art deco style used in many cinemas. In 1949 the theatre was renamed the Essoldo after a change of ownership. The cinema survived until 1964 when the building became a bingo hall.
