This postcard shows the entrance of the Royal Pavilion. It is a view south from the east side of the building, looking towards the Indian Memorial Gate. The Indian Gate was a gift from India to the people of Brighton, to express gratitude for the care offered to the wounded Indian soldiers of World War One. It was unveiled by the Maharaja of Patiala in 1921. Although derived from a photograph, this postcard was produced as a mechanically coloured print. Cheap postcards such as this were often coloured by workers who had not seen the view in question. Because of this, mistakes often occur. In this image the Indian Gate is depicted as a light grey; in reality, it has always been a dark brown.
