Description (Object or Artwork): This painting by Ravilious a seaplane prepares to take off by the water's edge. A dinghy can be seen in the right foreground. Eric Ravilious was an English painter, wood-engraver and designer. He was educated at Eastbourne School of Art in the early 20th century. In 1939 he started working as a war artist in northern waters and his limited use of colours, pale greys, white and blue, captures the sense of thin air and cold seas. His images stress the ordinariness of war rather than its glamour or heroicism. He died whilst observing a rescue mission at sea.
