Item related to the Brighton born artist Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898).
Cover design for The Yellow Book, Volume 5, April 1895.
Pen and ink drawing. Riverbank in foreground covered in flowers. To the right on the riverbank a faun kneels reading from a book to a dark haired girl in a long billowing dress who is sitting with her back to the spectator. Four slender trees to left. River behind the figures.

The Yellow Book was a fashionable magazine running from 1894–97. It took its name from the notorious covering into which controversial French novels were placed at the time. The founding principles were that literature and art should be treated independently and given equal status, Aubrey Beardsley was appointed art editor. This design was not used as Beardsley was dismissed as art editor just prior to publication.
