Description (Object or Artwork): Richmond and Sussex Streets School with small group of children far left near entrance to school. Two groups of men and women stand in the road in front of the building. Printed below is; School Board of the Borough of Brighton. Richmond and Sussex Streets Schools. Opened October 28th 1873. James Ireland Esq. Mayor of Brighton. Rev'd Dr. Hannah, Chairman. William Stevens Esq. Vice Chairman. Miss Ricketts. D.Friend, Esq. D.Fox, Esq. J. Ireland, Esq., Rev.d A.A. Morgan, G.D. Ryder ,Esq., Members of the Board. John Carden, Jun.r., Clerk' Richmond and Sussex Street schools were set up as Board Schoolsin 1873 on Richmond Street. Richmond Street school was the first in Brighton to offer school meals. The Richmond Street school ran along the west side of Claremont Row between Richmond and Sussex Streets; playgrounds separated the boys' and girls' sections.
