Description (Object or Artwork): Perspective view of the Chain Pier and Pier Head from the Pier looking North towards Brighton. Four piles visible with four pairs of towers each pair joined at the top by a pyramidal arch, pair of towers in centre with a lantern on top and bell. Centre foreground sundial enclosed by railings with man in top hat leaning on the railings. Pulley's to either side of main tower with rowing boat to right. Standing woman in yellow skirt with parasol to right. Seated man with yellow breeches and woman to right. Figure of a soldier talking to a man and woman in pink dress left from the sundial in foreground. from Bruce. Select Views of Brighton, 18129, pl.4. The pairs of towers were modelled on the design of the pylon gateways of Karnak in Egypt.
