Description (Object or Artwork): View of the Chain Pier looking towards Brighton to the West. St Nicholas' church and two windmills on hill in background to left. Four pairs of towers of the Phain pier visible. Pair in foreground with lantern on top and bell under arch. Pulley to left of towers. Left margin sundial enclosed by railings. Man and woman standing behind. Funnel from steam boat with smoke pouring from chimmney to left. Woman with parasol seated between two men on bench in front of pulley. Back view of woman standing centre talking to man seated on bench. Two women and a man seated on bench to right with small boy in front of them. Far right figure of man in top hat with cane, woman in bonnet and shawl beside. The pairs of towers were modelled on the design of the pylon gateways of Karnak in Egypt.
