Description: Monochrome photographic print showing the north side of Duke Street, Brighton, opposite the junction of Middle Street. The photograph dates from before 1867 when the row of buildings on the left, which abutted onto the southern side of Holy Trinity Church, were removed as part of a road widening scheme. The clock tower was known as Schenk's Clock after Frederick Schenk, a Geneva watchmaker who had occupied these premises for the past previous 20 years. Further up the street demolition had already taken place and an area of fenced off ground awaits sale and development.
