A monochrome photographic print showing Ah Di, a Nung soldier, looking down the Rawang valley.

Ah Di was a Nung man who was a soldier in the Kachin Rifles. He accompanied the British man James Henry Green to recruit Nung people who lived in the far north of what is today Kachin State, near the Rawang Valley. The presence of a locally recruited soldier like Ah Di was important in the attempt to enlist new recruits. It was hoped that the young men in the villages would be impressed by his appearance, his apparent knowledge of the world and relatively high income and, aspiring to be like him, would want to enlist also. Ah Di's bag, sword and lacquered cane bands around his calves clearly indicate that he is part of the larger Kachin community.

This photograph was taken by James Henry Green, a recruiting officer for the Burma Rifles who spent more than twenty years in Burma, much of it based in the northern hill states.
