This photographic print shows the Maharajah of Patiala at the Royal Pavilion Brighton. The Maharajah is inspecting a guard of honour gathered outside of the West entrance of the Pavilion. Several army offices and a civic dignitary can be seen behind him. Photograph taken during the opening ceremony for the Indian gate at the southern end of the Pavilion estate. The Indian Gate was a gift from India to the people of Brighton, as a thank you for the care offered to the wounded Indian soldiers of the First World War. It was unveiled by the Maharaja of Patiala in 1921. The Royal Pavilion, Dome and Corn Exchange acted as a military hospital for wounded Indian soldiers from December 1914 until early 1916.
