Burma image, WA0195. This monochrome photographic print is showing a 'Black Lisu' girl. Lisu are an ethnic group, part of the broader Kachin community, from northern Burma (Myanmar). Lisu clothing is made from rough home spun cotton or hemp, pin-striped in blue. The women wear a kilt falling in pleats from the waist to the knees and a loose fitting double breasted coat reaching below the waist. This photograph was taken by James Henry Green in the 1920s, a recruiting officer for the Burma Rifles who spent more than twenty years in Burma, much of it based in the northern hill states.
