'The [Cis Nmai Nung peoples] live in big villages like the Hkahkus, often numbering as many as thirty or forty houses. Their houses are large and are built upon the Hkahku design, with open porches. As many as fifteen or twenty people live in almost every house. They are comparatively well off. No failure of crops is remembered and on the occasion of my visit their rice supply was so large that rice was stored in the field huts as well as in the granaries in the village. The main house posts are generally decorated with carved breasts. Their social organisation is similar to that of the Dulengs for they have no chiefs. Some of their headmen are quite influential. Until recently they kept many slaves whose conditions were similar to those of the Hkahkus. On one occasion I saw a Madai Nat altar attached to the porch of an influential C.N. Nung Agi's [headman's] house, as is done by Hkahku chiefs' [dissertation, 1934:218-219].
