A Hkahku Laban from north of Sana.
"The Laban posts [erected after offerings have been made to the chief's ancestors for the fertility of that year's cultivation sites are placed in each side of the main path leading into a village. They are beyond the numshang [place where offerings are made to spirits on behalf of the whole village] and generally five or six yards from the first house. On them are roughly sketched paddy stalks, jewellery, etc., to indicate to the nats the requirements of the people. Jungle nats - Sawns, etc. - are not supposed to pass the Laban and enter the village. When one does so and he is discovered by his evil activities, the villagers drive him out with guns, bows and dahs [swords] as far as the Laban. The Hkahku Laban is very different in form from the Kachin type. The former type includes two posts with roughly carved human heads. They are very similar to memorial posts found outside Falam Chin villages." [dissertation, 1934:120-121]
