Nung recruits climbing mountain path.
"I never found [a Nung man] timid or shy. He is extremely inquisitive but is always ready to make friends. I must reiterate what has been said about his cheerful disposition. It was a great treat to travel amongst them. Everything that was said or done resulted in hoots of laughter. Whenever I left a village or passed a clearing, the Nungs - particularly the girls - stood on hilltops and mounds, waved their hands and blankets in the air and shouted 'Shala Eh Kadsa Shala Eh', the equivalent of 'Good luck; come again.' They are demonstrative. I shall never forget the Nungs who were so adventurous as to accompany me to Burma - the great unknown - four weeks' journey away, saying goodbye to the beautiful Nmai valley. They stood on the divide and with tears rolling down their faces they shouted 'Reme Hti Eh Shala Eh' ." [dissertation, 1934:188-189]
