Burma image, WA0045. Rapids on Ahkyang. P.R. Photograph taken by James Henry Green in Kachin Land, Burma (Myanmar). It was taken in the 1920s. 'In the Upper Nmai Valley area the Ahkyang Valley, judged as a human habitat, it the only desirable place, and it is here that the Lisus are gradually pushing out the Nungs. The hills in this valley are not so abrupt and slope gradually from the river, and below 7,000 feet are covered with grass and bracken intermingled with taungya [slash burn cultivation] clearings. It is indeed a pleasant place and is thickly populated, there being no less than 121 villages in it. The valley is cultivated throughout its whole length; mountain rice, Indian corn, millet and maize being the chief articles of cultivation.' [dissertation, 1934:17-18]
