Burma image, WA0051. Party of Nungs from Maru country. Dressed in Maru blankets. P.R. Photograph taken by James Henry Green in Kachin Land, Burma (Myanmar). It was taken in the 1920s. In the north east of what is today Kachin State, Nung people and Maru or Lawngwaw people lived in very close proximity to each other. There was, therefore, a god deal of cultural exchange between the two groups and the use of Lawngwaw blankets seems to have been particularly popular among Nung people. The design was different to the plain hemp blanket that was considered more 'traditionally' Nung and it is interesting to note that it seems to have been this narrow horizontal striped design which has been incorporated into what is considered the modern Nung (Rawang) dress.
