Burma image, WA1233. Curly Headed Maru. H&S
Green would usually begin his ethnographic description of peoples with his perception of key physical features. This was a common anthropological methodology of the time and may be found in many ethnographic books and articles related to Burma of the 1920s and 1930s. Undoubtedly these kinds of comments seem not only insensitive to modern sensibilities but also lead to highly spurious arguments. Green would sometimes take photographs to illustrate his written descriptions and this photograph is of this type. This is a typical description as would appear in his dissertation for Cambridge University in 1934: "[The Maru peoples] are like the Nungs and although of a short stocky build fine specimens of humanity. Their noses are not as well formed as those of the Nungs and more broad flat noses are seen. Individuals with wavy, sometimes almost curly hair exist, and in some exceptional cases the nasal notch is almost as marked as it is in the native Australian. This is possibly a Pre-Dravidian strain similar to that of the Sakai. In spite of these exceptions, however, great homogeneity exists amongst both Nungs and Marus." [dissertation, 1934:222]
