Burma image, WA1297. Slave owner taking oath.
In this photograph the slave owner is taking an oath that he will desist from ever owning slaves again. The sword would be held over the head and the oath taken that some terrible fate will befall the owner should he break his vow. The usual formula of a Hkahku oath is: "If I lie may the tiger devour me, may the lightning nat [Mu] strike me, may the water nat [Bareng] seize me when I cross the water and may I die a violent death." [dissertation, 1934:112]
