"Excepting the skirt, the garments of the women of each Palaung or Pale clan are cut to the fashion of the clan, although they vary in colour and texture. The skirt (klang), however, is of the same straight shape for the women of all clans. The stuff of which it is made is woven in horizontal stripes, which, as in the Scottish tartans, vary in width and colour in the different clans. The stripes show to which clan a woman belongs - she would never dream of wearing a skirt woven with the stripes of any other clan but her own."
