"The Akha men do not emulate their women in dressiness, yet there are apparently well-to-do men among them for on market days in Shan villages there are always some who appear in elaborately braided coats with a greater or lesser display of silver ornaments, coat buckles, buttons, necklaces and ear-rings. The Akha's 'ken' [pipe] is made of a dried gourd with reed pipes inserted, and it is a very pretty instrument. Both the tunes and the tone suggest the bagpipes rather than an organ, and the apparent exertion of playing also suggests the chanter." ['Burma and Beyond', Sir J. G. Scott, London, 1932, p.272-273]
