"In the beginning of February, people are busily engaged in mending their houses. Wherever is found the tall grass, which grows wild in open spaces of the jungle and is used for thatching the roofs, people are busy cutting it, making it into bundles, and carrying it into the villages. Sometimes the barefooted girls and women get painful wounds from the stubble of the cut grass. At this time of the year one often sees girls and women limping along the paths. When the grass is brought into the village, the old women and the little girls are kept busy in knotting the grass on the rods to be used in thatching; when completed, these rods are tied one above the other to the rafters and beams of the roofs to be thatched."
