Burma image, WA1585. Kaw [Akha] firing bow. (Researcher's notes in brackets)
"[Akha men] are excellent shots with the cross bow. Equally certainly they are not fighting men, though in 1854-55, when the Siamese made an unsuccessful attempt to take Kengtung, the Akha hung on the rear of the retreating Siamese army and, with their cross-bow quarrels and spears and dahs [swords] nearly made an end of the entire force. It was probably the Akha with the Lahu, too, who annihilated a Burmese army which marched up into the Wa country to exploit 'the Stream of the Golden Deer'. No more was ever heard of the army." ['Burma and Beyond', Sir J. G. Scott, London, 1932, p.271]
