"The chief and the salangs [elders] in council annually decide what hillsides are to be cultivated by the group in the following season. The land when selected is divided up and allotted to the households. The number of mouths to be fed and the number of able-bodied are taken into account when the area given to each family is considered. The plot once allotted for all intents and purposes then belongs to the household for the season, provided they work it according to custom. At the end of the harvest the land ownership once again reverts to the Chief. In the centre of each household plot is a field hut. The number of huts is therefore about the same as the number of houses in the village." [dissertation, 134:108-109]
