Burma image, WAA0115. [A Chin village] (Researcher's notes in brackets)
"The villages in the Chin hills may be divided into three types, the village of the nomadic jhoomer, the village of the professional raider, and the permanent village of those who are sufficiently powerful to resist attack, or who pay blackmail to ensure immunity from raids or tithes to the powerful in return for protection. As the village is nearly always placed in the side of the hills, it is necessary to excavate and make a level platform for the compound and thus a series of platforms are cut in the face of the mountain. Usually water is carried into the villages by troughs or wooden leads so as to save the trouble of fetching water from the springs. These leads may frequently be seen winding a mile and more round the hills, spanning deep nullahs and passing over broken ground, before entering the village." ['The Chin Hills: Vol. I', B. S. Carey and H. N. Tuck, Rangoon, 1896, pp.174-175]
