Albumen photographic print featuring The Star Inn, High Street, Alfriston, Sussex. A man and boy are stood outside the pub. The corner of the pub has a carving of a lion's head at street level. This is a figurehead which belonged to an 18th century Dutch warship which sank in the English Channel. It was washed up at Cuckmere Haven and is believed to have been given to the inn by a group of smugglers. James Gatland was the innkeeper when the photograph was taken and his name appears on the pub sign. Mounted on card with other prints numbered HAMTP005080.1 - HATMP005080.5.
