Painting from the Fine Art collection. "Jacob's Deception" by Jan Victors. Curtains are drawn back to reveal Isaac lying in bed holding the hairy hand of Jacob. Rebecca stands behind. Meat and bread lie on the patterned bedspread.
Jacob, aided by his mother, Rebecca, pretends to his blind and dying father Isaac, that he is Esau his eldest son. This deception, in order to claim his fathers inheritance, was prophesised by God (Genesis 27.18-19). Jacob is dressed in his brother Esau's hunting clothing so that his father would not recognise his smell. A cooked meal of domestic livestock is seen placed on the bed. c.1655.

The scene depicted is from the Old Testament. Jacob, aided by his mother, Rebecca, convinces his blind and dying father, Isaac, that he is the older brother, Esau, so that he can claim his brother?s inheritance. As Esau was ?a hairy man?, Jacob covered his hand with a goatskin to complete the deception.
