Description: In a room furnished and decorated in the 'roman' style, a boy has just shot an arrow at a target which has two arrows in it; a third is impaled in a gilded cockerel. A girl applauds; the parents and two younger children with pipes and tambour sit behind. Signed bottom right and dated Rome 1886.
In this work, Capobianchi depicted a group of Roman children practising indoor archery. The subject offered the artist the opportunity to demonstrate his archaeological awareness by depicting Roman figures within their domestic setting. The representation of such subjects reflects the interest of Neoclassical artists at the end of the nineteenth century.
